After the race, an ever-humble Trott broke down in tears speaking about her historic win.

“I didn’t expect this at all. I am so happy that it all came together,” she said.

“I honestly can’t thanks everybody at home enough – and the people behind the scenes that you don’t see that really help me.

“You think of people like Sir Chris Hoy who came here and did it time and time again.

“To be able to repeat my success in London, I can’t even explain what I’m going through right now. I’m so happy.”

Trott dominated the early rounds of the ominium, going into the final with a 24 point lead over her nearest rival.

Cycling legend Sir Chris was so sure of her victory that he tweeted about a third of the way through the 100-lap race: “Without a doubt, Trott has this gold medal.”

His prediction was right, as the Hertfordshire native finished the race with 230 points, putting her well ahead of American Sarah Hammer, who won silver with 206 points, and Belgian Jolien D’Hoore, who finished with 199.

They are now the most successful Olympic couple ever

Between them they have won five golds at Rio 2016, which would put them in 13th place on the medal table were they an individual nation.

Kenny’s victory at the keirin final means he is now tied with Sir Chris as the greatest British Olympian ever.
