The identity of the new manager will be confirmed in a press conference at St David's Hotel in Cardiff Bay scheduled for midday, the FAW confirmed to Press Association Sport.

Former Wales internationals Chris Coleman and John Hartson have both expressed strong interest in taking over from Speed, who died in November.

Coleman was due to hold talks over the job with FAW officials this week and has appeared to be the front-runner for the post.

Other names linked with the role have included Ryan Giggs, Ian Rush and Speed's assistant Raymond Verheijen.

Should former Wales centre-back Coleman be the new boss, it will be an appointment to his dream job but nevertheless tinged with sadness for the 41-year-old.

He was an international team-mate of Speed and said at the weekend: "It is a very sensitive situation so if I am offered the job and I accept it I'll have mixed emotions."

He told Sky Sports on Sunday: "If it is to be - if the job is mine - then it will be the pinnacle for me. Managing your country is the pinnacle for any manager.

"In another situation, I'd probably be on cloud nine but because of the situation, because it was Gary, who was a close friend, of course I almost feel a little bit guilty that I'm even going to talk about taking the job, because Gary is no longer with us."

Dutchman Verheijen, who has not hidden his interest in the job, is keen to stay on at least in the role he had in Speed's back-up team.
