West Virginia is a key state to keep an eye on in the midterm elections.

According to figures released by the secretary of state's office, more than 174,000 residents voted early, a record for a midterm election since early voting was first allowed in 2002.

Like Montana, West Virginia has seen less polling than other competitive states, so polls must be taken with a pinch of salt.

But there are some predictions that can be tentatively garnered from the latest polls of the state.

Who will win?

Senator Joe Manchin is seeking his second full six-year term in the Senate.

He first took office after a 2010 special election prompted by the death of Senator Robert C. Byrd.

Challenging him is Republican Patrick Morrisey, the two-term state attorney general.

According to polling site FiveThirtyEight, Joe Manchin is a seven in eight (88 percent) favourite to retain his seat.

However it’s important to keep in mind that West Virginia was won by President Trump by 42 percentage points in 2016.

FiveThirtyEight said despite polls, “we’d caution you not to write off the Republicans” in West Virginia.

What about the House?

The House looks likely to hold Republican.

The first district - a solid red according to polls - sees Congressmen David McKinley facing Democrat Kendra Fershee.

The second district - a likely red according to polls - sees Congressman Alex Mooney facing Democrat Talley Sergent, a former Hillary Clinton state presidential campaign director.

And the third district - also a likely red according to polls - sees Democratic state Senator Richard Ojeda against Republican state delegate Carol Miller.

What time do polls open and close?

For West Virginia, polls open at 6.30am and close at 7.30am.

When can we expect results?

Counting will start as soon as the polling stations close, but due to the expected high turnout and the size of some states, it will take a while.

Given that some key districts should be called relatively early in the evening, we could have an idea of who will control the House by midnight.

In the 2014 midterms, the Associated Press called the Senate for the GOP at 11.25pm.

We should have a clearer picture on what the elections mean for the country by 8am local time on Wednesday, November 7.
