Tesco has urgently recalled a popular fruit snack over concerns it could cause food poisoning. Packs of Tesco Grape & Berry Medley were found to have been contaminated with salmonella, bacteria that can trigger diarrhoea, fever and stomach pains.

A notice issued by the supermarket chain said the contamination was detected during testing and “may make the product unsafe to eat”. Salmonella infections in England reached the highest level in a decade last year, with more than 10,300 cases — up from almost 8,900 in 2023. Infections are usually caused by eating contaminated food including poultry, meat, eggs, raw fruit or vegetables.

The recall applies to 230g packs with use by dates of February 16 and 17.

A notice shared by the Food Standards Agency said: “Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps.

“If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should stay away from work, school or nursery until you have stopped having symptoms for at least 48 hours to avoid passing it on to others.”

Other symptoms of salmonella poisoning include nausea, vomiting, chills and headache.

The notice added: “If you have bought the above product do not eat it. Instead, return it to any Tesco store for a full refund.”

Symptoms of salmonella poisoning typically last for between a few days and a week.

Most cases can be treated at home with plenty of rest and fluids, but some people may need treatment if they become seriously unwell.

Children, older people and those with weakened immune systems can be at risk of more severe illness.
