Four horses die at Wincanton

THE vulnerability of racing was evident at Wincanton yesterday after four horses were killed.

Three trainers won races but will have empty boxes to fill. A fourth, Nigel Hawke, will only have heartache.

Charlie Longsdon had landed the fifth race with Royal Katidoki, only to lose Neysauteur with a broken leg in the next event.

At one point it didn’t look as though the meeting would get past the third event as racing was delayed after a melee in the novices’ hurdle.

The favourite Bob Buckler’s Warlord fell bringing down Hawke's Stars In His Eyes.

Warlord was destroyed, Stars In His Eyes fatally injured and his jockey Jay Harris rushed to Yeovil Hospital with internal and facial injuries.

Three races later Buckler saddled a victorious He’s A Gaffer.

But the sombre day was capped by the death of Priests Bridge, killed instantly by a fall in the fourth race.

The vulnerability of racing was evident

Priests Bridge was returning after an  absence in which she had become a mother.

Owners Geoffrey and Donna Keeys had debated whether to return her to training with Nigel Twiston-Davies.

It beggars belief that, like Buckler and Longsdon, Twiston-Davies had also saddled a winner, Rowdy Yeats.
