Lewis Hamilton punished alongside Max Verstappen as F1 penalties galore at Brazilian GP
Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have joined Max Verstappen on a long list of penalised drivers in Sao Paulo.

Both Ferrari drivers have joined Max Verstappen on a growing list of racers who will serve grid penalties at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Interlagos is one of the remaining venues this season where overtaking is seen as being more simple than at other circuits, and so the teams that need to take the pain of a grid penalty for using more engine parts than they are allowed over a season are choosing to do so here.
It was confirmed earlier on Saturday that Verstappen is going to start Sunday's race from the back of the grid. The Dutchman has taken several new parts incurring penalties worth more than 15 places' worth on the grid, which is converted into an automatic back-of-grid start.
And he has been joined on the list of those serving penalties by another pair of big-hitters. Lewis Hamilton has taken a new internal combustion engine, as has team-mate Charles Leclerc. It means both Ferraris will serve 10-place grid penalties, as it is the first time they have gone over their ICE allocation this year.
Four ICEs are allowed for each car over a season. Some have argued that number should have been raised this year, given it is the first of a new engine regulations cycle and reliability was always going to be poorer than in recent seasons.
But that has not happened and so, particularly in the second half of this season, we have seen a lot of grid penalties incurred by drivers being forced to go beyond their annual allowance.

Ferrari have had stronger reliability than many of their rivals. Mercedes, for example, have suffered several engine failures which have forced George Russell to go beyond his allocation multiple times, the latest of which has happened this weekend where, again, the Mercedes driver is serving a five-place grid drop.
But even the Scuderia have not been able to avoid forcing their drivers to start in the bottom half of the grid this weekend. Both cars have been fitted with their fifth ICE of the season, with only four units allowed per season.
Verstpapen has also taken his fifth ICE, but his punishment is more severe because he has also gone beyond his allowance of turbochargers and exhaust sets for the year. His penalties are worth 30 places of grid drops, which are converted into that automatic back-of-grid start.
