Welcome to Express Sport's F1 LIVE blog for the Mexico City Grand Prix. Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli is on the cusp of becoming the youngest world champion since Sebastian Vettel this weekend. The 20-year-old has to finish 9th or higher to claim the title in Mexico and the Italian is set to start fourth on the grid.

Lewis Hamilton has claimed pole for the first time since joining Ferrari after narrowly beating former Mercedes teammate George Russell to top spot by 0.009 seconds, with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc just over a tenth behind in third. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen will start in fifth after being handed a one-place grid penalty and was involved in several incidents during qualifying. As the F1 world prepares for a potentially momentous race, Express Sport provides you with the latest updates and news.

Lewis Hamilton on Ferrari breakthrough

Lewis Hamilton has attributed his pole position in Mexico to his preparations away from the track as he continues to defy his age. The 41-year-old leads the grid for the first time as a Ferrari star, marking his overall 105th start in first, and Hamilton has shed light on his dedicated routines and passion for the sport following his breakthrough.

"When there's a will, there's a way. It's all in the mind, honestly, for all of us," Hamilton said. "We all have our aches and pains, I ice bath a lot, I do lots of different things that you can do to keep yourself young and fit.

"But I love what I do and that love has not gone – I wake up every day thinking about it, I dream about it. I've got this amazing support around the world and these guys keep me going, so I hope they're happy with that today and that I can do it again tomorrow."

He added: “Wow, to have pole here, I don't know if I've had a pole here before. It's my first pole with Ferrari and 105, I like that number."

Mexico City GP qualifying result changes

The Mexico City GP starting grid will look different to the qualifying results as Liam Lawson has been disqualified. It was outlined that the car "was in breach of the minimum MGU-K power requirement just after crossing the line on his fastest lap in Q2".

The FIA Technical Delegate's report added: "The driver maximum power demand and the electrical DC power of the ERS-K were reduced at greater rates than what is permitted by the Regulations."

Lawson had qualified eighth and was already set to move down to ninth due to his earlier one-place penalty. However, his disqualification means that all the drivers below him in qualifying have been bumped up a place.

Max Verstappen settles Liam Lawson row

Max Verstappen has insisted he has no hard feelings about his penalty after his altercation with Liam Lawson during practice in Mexico. Both drivers received a one-place penalty.

The Dutchman initially said that "no idea what went through Liam's head" and did not consider it "very smart behaviour". Despite accusing Lawson of picking a fight on the track, Verstappen has since given a more measured response to the incident.

"How do I see the penalty? Well, it's a bit like when you watch other sports and sometimes see decisions being made. You can agree or disagree with them," Verstappen said. "Of course, I have my own opinion on it, but I've already said everything that I wanted to say about it – internally as well."

Max Verstappen airs Land Norris frustration

Max Verstappen has aired his frustration after insisting his final qualifying lap was hampered by Lando Norris. As he ended his final attempt, Verstappen was in contention for the fastest lap but encountered traffic and pinned the blame on Norris.

“I had two cars in front of me, so I was already losing downforce in Turn 12,” Verstappen told Viaplay. “It just broke out more there, because that car was only one and a half to two seconds ahead of me. And then he [Norris] parks it on the right side, which is exactly where you want to open up for the hairpin."

“You can’t position your car properly, and you also lose your reference point on the right side. It’s a shame. Of course, pole position was within reach. Then we would have been second.”
