The next humiliation is waiting for Angela Merkel and her CDU
The Heute show predicted humiliation for Mrs Merkel and suggested the only thing that could save Berlin was the return of the four post World War Two Allied powers.
The programme opened with a picture of Mr Merkel dressed in a bear costume and wearing a banner describing her as “Berlin’s Problem Bear”, referencing the symbol of Berlin.
Host Oliver Welke tells the studio audience: “The next humiliation is waiting for Angela Merkel and her CDU.
“Cynics may say it doesn't matter who is in government at all and Berlin can actually only be saved if the four victorious Allied powers finally return!
“But there have to be elections anyway, these are the rules. And our Chancellor was yet again truly ‘helpful’ during the election campaign for the CDU/CSU union candidate.”
He goes on to say: “Now you can blame Angela Merkel, and it is very much in fashion these days, for a lot of things, for example that she is neither willing nor capable to explain her policies properly to the citizens.
“No question, but still the extent of anger and the things she is being blamed for concretely... I've kind of lost track…”
The results of today’s election are due tonight at 10.15am UK time.
