Holiday families shell out a fortune due to pester power

PESTER POWER on summer holidays is costing Scottish parents £150 more than other families, a report has revealed.

Scottish families spend an average of £707 while on holiday

Scottish holidaymakers were found to spend over a quarter more than the UK average when it comes to having fun on their hard-earned breaks.

A survey carried out by the Post Office’s Travel Money service found that Scots families spent an average of £707 while on holiday – 27 per cent more than other UK tourists and a fifth more than they budgeted for.

The extra expenditure is driven by pester power from children, with the cost of beach items, ice creams, water park tickets and arcade machines adding £150 onto the cost of family holidays.

It comes just a week before the schools break up for summer.

The survey found that Scottish holidaymakers spent an average of 27 per cent more than other UK tourists, and a fifth more than the average planned spend of £588.89.

By comparison, the UK average spend was £557, only six per cent more than the average budget of £525.

Andrew Brown of Post Office Travel Money said: "Scottish holidaymakers emerged as some of the biggest spenders in our research for this year’s Family Holiday Report. The good news is that prices are down in many resorts – particularly for meals – but remember that pester power can soon empty the family purse so we recommend that holidaymakers set a budget and stick to it."

Sunny Beach in Bulgaria and Spain’s Costa del Sol are tipped by the Post Office as the best value resorts for families.
