Scandal of deadly postcode lottery for cancer victims

DEATHS from prostate cancer are almost five times higher in some parts of England than others, campaigners claimed yesterday.

BLOOD GAME: For cancer victims the postcode can determine the standard of care

The figures, based on parliamentary constituencies, show that almost one in five have death rates more than 25 per cent above England’s average, which in 2007 was 25 deaths per 100,000 men.

Men living in Tottenham, north London, are almost five times more likely to die of prostate cancer than men in south east Cambridgeshire.

The death rate in Tottenham is 57 deaths per 100,000 people – 131 per cent above England’s average. In south east Cambridgeshire, the death rate is 12 per 100,000 – 49 per cent below the English average.

The Prostate Cancer Charter for Action, which analysed figures from the Office for National Statistics, said men were victims of a postcode lottery.

Spokesman and consultant urologist Dr Frank Chinegwundoh said while there was evidence of some improvement there was inequality in accessing services.

“It is not enough that prostate cancer services are improving as a whole if patients face such a lottery in the care they receive,” he said. “We need better services for all patients across the country, not just a lucky few.

“The failure of the NHS to implement Nice’s Improving Outcomes Guidance is partly responsible for these widening inequalities.” He added: “We look to the Government and the NHS to ensure that this crucial guidance is implemented in full, so that the care prostate cancer patients receive is no longer left to chance.”
