This year's Royal Ascot event kicked off on Tuesday

There was the usual array of crazy, over-the-top headpieces floating around but one in particular didn't quite fit in.

Princess Beatrice, 27, narrowly missed out on a spot in the best dressed list once again - with many suggesting her choice of headwear could be to blame.

For the opening of the prestigious annual event yesterday, Beatrice wore a cream, knee-length skirt with navy and metallic stripes, teamed with a navy, military-style, cropped blazer which was smart, demure and much safer than her usual outfit choices.

When it came to finding an appropriate headpiece, Beatrice took the 'match-it-to-your-outfit' element quite seriously.

Ladies' headwear always attracts attention, sometimes for the wrong reasons

Fans of the royal family will remember the furore around Beatrice and her outfit at the Royal Wedding back in 2011.

The youngster hit headlines around the world thanks to an interesting choice in headgear.

Beatrice wore a taupe Valentino Haute Couture dress and matching coat, and she teemed this with a hug bow-shaped headpiece which was perched in an awkward position on her forehead.

Back to Ascot 2016 - many racegoers took the patriotic approach with EU-themed headwear including miniature models of the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben.

Milliner Lisa Tan wore an usual design with red, yellow and green flowers and arrows.

Interior designer Anouska Lancaster went with a tropical theme with fruit, flowers and parrots in her hair.

Whlie fashion PR Nazer Bullen went with an elaborate floral design which tumbled down to her shoulder.

Some of the best dressed at Ascot day one included TV personality Amy Willerton who dazzled in a stunning navy ensemble.
