The UK's most popular names have been revealed by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), based on last year's birth registrations. Olivia continues to hold the top spot for British girls, followed by Lily and Amelia.
For the third consecutive year, Muhammad remains the most popular name for boys across the UK. While the top 10 shows little variation from previous years, a number of fresh names have broken into the top 100, including several "old-fashioned" choices, signalling a shift in trends.
New entries for baby girls include Marnie, Eliana, Gracie, Anaya, Alba, Lilah, and Frankie. For boys, Vincent, Carter, Stanley, and Ruben have made their debut in the top 100.
Marnie originated as a shortened version of Margaret and rose to prominence in 1964, following the release of Alfred Hitchcock's film Marnie. While Marnie is regarded as a vintage and retro name, increasing numbers of British parents are now opting for this nostalgic choice for their daughters.
Mothers flocked to the parenting forum Mumsnet to voice their opinions, with one saying: "It's a nice choice, but if it was me, I would use Marina, Maren, Maria, Margaret, and use Marnie as the nickname."
Margaret has been in use since the Middle Ages and ranked as the most popular girl's name in England during the 1920s and 1940s.
Other mothers remarked on its traditional form, with many noting that Margaret sounds distinctly old-fashioned. One mum said: "I had always thought it was an old lady name - every old lady seems to be called Margaret."
Another user remarked: "My nana is called Margaret too, and I'd love to use her name for a little girl. For me, it's a bit too old-fashioned, but I'd use Maggie or Peggy."
