Coffee lovers can give their morning brew a surprisingly creamy texture by adding one simple ingredient already sitting in the kitchen. Adding a small amount of butter or coconut oil to coffee can give it a smoother, richer and more velvety mouthfeel, turning an ordinary black coffee into something closer to a creamy latte.

Adding a small amount of fat can change the experience of drinking coffee. Butter melts into hot coffee, while coconut oil can create a rich, smooth texture when thoroughly mixed in. However, the amount matters. Adding too much can leave the drink oily rather than creamy.

A 2021 study published in the Journal of Food Science tested nine different iced-coffee drinks containing varying levels of fat and coffee.

The researchers used cream to alter the fat content and asked 231 regular coffee drinkers to rate the drinks, including their mouthfeel and overall appeal.

The study found significant relationships between fat content and how much consumers liked the coffee.

The researcher concluded that fat can affect sensory characteristics, including mouthfeel, taste and aroma. It that increasing fat improved overall liking up to a certain point, after which too much fat reduced it.

The fatty beverage has become associated with "bulletproof coffee", also known as butter coffee. It is a high-calorie caffeinated drink made with added fat, intended to fuel start your day by replacing carb-heavy breakfasts.

It was created by the originator of the Bulletproof diet, Dave Asprey, an American entrepreneur and author. The drink has become popular with low-carb and keto diet followers.

It combines high-quality coffee beans with unsalted butter and a medium chain triglyceride (MCT), such as that derived from coconut oil.

The ingredients are blended together, served warm and take on the look of a creamy latte.

If you want to try it for yourself, start with a small teaspoon of butter or coconut oil and mix or blend it thoroughly into a freshly brewed cup.

The result could surprise you.
