While millions of people around the world cook rice every day, many of us still struggle to get it just right, whether it’s due to the water-to-rice ratio or a lack of seasoning. Rice is a common staple that is regularly featured in our daily meals but it's also a food that can taste quite bland and let's face it, there's nothing more disappointing than taking time to cook a dish just for it to end up being tasteless. However, there is one affordable kitchen item that you probably already have at home that could make all the difference - and take it from bland to delicious in no time at all.
Adding both water and chicken or vegetable broth when cooking rice can add depth, richness, and a delicious savoury boost to the dish. According to Emma Christensen, former editor at The Kitchn and a graduate of the Cambridge School for Culinary Arts, the broth will elevate your rice from "boring" to "amazing" in a matter of minutes.
The expert recommends adding half water half broth to the pan to create the perfect balance and texture.
Emma Christensen wrote: "This one’s a no-brainer, assuming that you have some extra stock handy! If not, I’ll add a dab of chicken or vegetable bouillon.
"I sometimes find that using 100% chicken broth can make the rice feel gummy or overly-starchy — personally, I usually go for a 50/50 mix of broth and water. This adds a layer of flavour and richness without going overboard."
Adding broth while cooking rice infuses the dish with extra flavour and adds more of a creamy texture without being overpowering.

This is just one of the expert's three key tricks for cooking rice.
The other two tips involve toasting the rice grains and seasoning the rice with what you are making.
She recommends toasting the dry rice grains in a small amount of butter or olive oil before adding the water to add a nutty note to the dish and says this is especially flavourful when done with brown rice and other whole grains.
The last tip is seasoning while cooking. This can be aromatic herbs, vegetables, and whole spices including bay leaves which will make your rice dish filled with flavours that remain subtle.
